Why Guardians?

Guardians help Indigenous Nations honour the responsibility to care for lands and waters. They serve as the “eyes and ears” on traditional territories.

They also offer a way to address climate change, sustain biodiversity, support culture and language revitalization, and create sustainable jobs in remote communities.

That work benefits us all.

Over 160 First Nations Guardians programs are managing lands, waters and resources across Canada right now.

Their work is as varied as the terrain. Along the Pacific Coast, Guardians help sustain wild salmon runs. In the Mackenzie River Valley, Guardians monitor pipeline repairs. In eastern Manitoba, Guardians test water quality around hydro dams. In Labrador, Guardians help implement an Indigenous-led plan to support the health of caribou herds and monitor some of Canada’s largest mines. And across the country, Guardians will have a central role in managing Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas.

But many more Nations and communities are eager to launch Guardians programs. They know the enormous contribution Guardians make to the health of communities and the stewardship of lands and waters. And ALL Guardians programs need long-term investment to continue this important work. When you add your support, it means that these benefits can expand — for all of us.

“Who is going to speak up for the people? Who is going to speak up for our land? It’s us, the Guardians.”

— Charlotte Denny
