Lisa Shepperd, Kaska Land Guardians

For Lisa Shepperd, Guardian from the Dane nan yḗ dāh Network (Kaska Land Guardians), there is no average day on the job. Some days she finds herself in the office, others she’s out patrolling the land during morel mushroom season, and on some of her favourites she is leading local school kids on water monitoring expeditions. 

Growing up in Lower Post, BC, Lisa recalls that she rarely spent time on the land as a child -- but all of that has changed since becoming a Guardian in 2017. The Guardians Program has created a love for her traditional territory, and a deeper understanding for the experiences of the Elders. As a mother of two, Lisa sees the connection between her People’s future to their ancestral past: “I want my children - and their children - to have clean water, trees, and healthy land.”
