Each spring, the herring return to the Pacific coastline — bringing life to the entire region. The Heiltsuk Nation has a longstanding relationship with the fish and people depend on the herring, as do many other creatures. Frank Brown says the Heiltsuk understand that we must acknowledge our interdependence and fulfill the responsibility to care for resources like the herring. That’s why the land and waters need Guardians.
