Department of Prime Minister & Cabinet: Consolidated report on Indigenous Protected Areas following Social Return on Investment analyses

In Australia, Indigenous protected areas account for a majority of the country’s conserved lands. The Australian government recognizes that protected areas require ongoing management, and it has invested $840 million CAD in Indigenous Ranger programs from 2007 to 2023.

At the request of the Department of Prime Minister & Cabinet, researchers at Social Ventures Australia Consulting assessed the value of changes resulting from that investment.

The researchers concluded that each $1 invested in integrated Indigenous Ranger and Indigenous protected areas programs can generate up to $3 in social, economic and cultural benefits, including reduced income support, improved health and lowered justice costs.
